Peace in His Coming

The second week of Advent is marked by the lighting of the second candle variously called the candle of peace, of prophecy, or of preparation.

Perhaps you have found the Advent readings of christianity.com [What are Advent Readings and Why are They Important] helpful, and even obtained a copy of the devotional.

We find words of comfort in Isaiah's prophetic passage of Isaiah 40 - especially those who have endured a season of hard "service" before the Lord. "Comfort, comfort my people, says your God."

The Lord is coming in power. The Son's first arrival may not have seemed all that powerful (even placed in a manger --feeding trough when he was born) until he triumphed over death, sin, and the law in his resurrection. However he is certainly returning in power and glory. As such we prepare - but taking comfort as well.

We see in Isaiah's prophecy that the reasons we take comfort are:

  • The promises of God's word

  • His presence (and protection)

  • The pardon Jesus already brought about

So, in all these ways we take comfort in the peace that The Messiah brought and brings. May we prepare well for His return! (You are definitely welcome to join us this Sunday for the Second Sunday of Advent at 2EFC.)
